Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
if it was done I missed it -

“I was asked in the pre-match press conference about the possibility of more young players going out on loan and the chances of Toni Martinez breaking into the first-team squad.

“Will he (Toni) be good enough? You never know. He should be good enough. He has scored a lot of goals but it is very hard to judge players from different levels and different leagues.

“Last year I saw British clubs putting young players in and I am asking are they putting them based on training and then I found out they have a policy of 15 games so they send them on loan for a year or too and then if they are good, they take them back and put them in the team.

“For me that is the key. The U23s is really good for young players but the stage comes when the players should go. Is it one season, two seasons….

“We have all been there. Even the big players like Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand, you should play and live with the people who are feeding their families out of those Saturdays and Sundays and that is the key. We send them and look at them.

“We then decide if he is good enough and put him in a game or he is not good enough, let’s release him or sell him.

“Frank and Rio both went out on loan. Rio was great in training but he didn’t get a chance ahead of myself, Marc Rieper and Julian Dicks.

“He went to Bournemouth and that is what Harry Kane did and many others like that. That is why Josh Cullen is on loan and Reece Burke is on loan. Marcus Browne has gone into the Championship and that is the way for me.

“Reece Oxford had a situation with the contract and now it is signed, but he also didn’t train for six weeks because of injury, but now he is back and it is too late for a loan. He might get a chance here.

“The plan with Reece is he has a great future with us and he should be in West Ham if he is centre-back three or four, but not five. If that is the case he should go out on loan for one year to emerge and improve and then come back and play. That is the very simple philosophy but definitely the best one.”

If I could understand what point he's making I could respond to it. What is the 'policy of 15 games' he is talking about?

Re: Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
I would imagine that managers/coaches etc generally want to see players play regularly, 90mins, for a period of about 15 games to decide if they have the required quality, temperament etc to be promoted into the first team? Oddly enough I think most people apart from you V could've filled in the blanks there.

I'm sure Slav will be looking forward to your response.....

Players go on loan for a 15 game spell

They do well, they get a shot at our first team

They dont then see ya !

Looks like he feels the gap between U23 and first team is too far......and that a loan in the football league bridges that gap

Rio and Frank played about 10 games out on loan.
Defoe played about 30

Have always said its about maturity being away from home as well as some experience against bigger bodies in meaningful games.
Unless its more about them developing physically I think those sort of numbers are enough.
Two seasons out on loan probably means you have doubts.

Sven

little titbit I found out awhile ago, Rio still goes back once/twice a year and has dinner with the landlady he stayed with when on loan at Bournemouth. he credits her with making him grow up whilst he was away from home and helping him to become the man/footballer he is now, even though he was only there for a few months. bought her a house too. nice touch.

Defoe got 18 goals in 29 games for Bournemouth, they must have been gutted when that loan ended!

Some careers those 3 players alone went on to have.

So what's happening at Everton? 17, 18 year olds coming on and scoring on their debut?
I wouldn't mind that at West Ham. I hear young Billy Dane has some skill in his boots.

Re: Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
Reece Burke did 30+ games on loan last season. Way more than 15. So I'm not sure what's gone on there - doesn't seem to fit his blueprint.

Fair to say I think Bilic is talking nonsense. It doesn't make a lot of sense, nor do I agree with much of it. My head hasn't imploded, but I guess my response is predictable enough.

For real bullshit, David Gold's tweets about young players yesterday were right up there. The sort of thing I wouldn't expect even the worst of the morons on here to type.

For Reece Burke see comments regarding Oxford in the article

No point him being 5th choice with no europe so he went to get more first team footballl in the championship

Simple as that

Did anyone say it was a blueprint, nor a rule written in stone?

Fuck me for someone that claims to be intelligent you really are a cretin at times.

What did he say?

Feel free to change the word 'blueprint' for something else that you think fits better. For cretinous behaviour, picking out random words you don't like from other posts would have to be right up there.

Agree in principle...

But 1 or 2 season lo and are too much...

Doesn't take that long to see if the player can jake the grade and step up to Prem stsndard...

How long were Rio and Lampard loans...???

Re: Slav on developing young players - Alex V's head will implode
In the case of Oxford we've got Reid, Collins, Ogbonna and now Fonte but the only reason he is now 5th choice is because we signed another defender.

Obviously Fonte is a better defender than Oxford but there will ALWAYS be the option to sign a better defender than a youngster who hasn't been given a chance.

Same goes for any position. The option will always be there to sign a player with more experience and ability so at what point do the club take a gamble on a players potential and give him game time?

We need to have a bit more faith and do what Spurs, Southampton and Everton do every now and then. Just give them a fucking chance.

What is also quite disappointing is that the only youth players getting a chance for West Ham this season have been players developed elsewhere.
